At 33 Talent, we believe in understanding and harnessing the power of self-motivation in business and life.
What makes you tick & what you get out of bed for in the morning are key understandings to weave into your career choices to ensure success and enjoyment in the workplace. Equally, if you’re managing a team, understanding what makes them tick is 90% of your remit fulfilled - acting on that is the easy part for most managers.
We’ve trialed many psychometric assessments over the years to help deliver this understanding, but how do you use them in the hiring and development process?
THE HIRING PROCESS
A robust psychometric assessment can help bring out the deeper motivations and interests that may not be as apparent in the interview process as technical or presentation skills are. Jon Mason from Elaura, one of our assessment partners, explains that it allows you to “start hiring people who actually have the passion to sustain the role, whether that is admin or sales or technical or customer services or…”.
Whereas in most psychometric assessments everyone is put into one of 4 set boxes, or personality types, in the 10+ years Elaura have been using their assessment tool with corporate clients, students and individuals around the world they have never once seen the exact same results in different people.
However Jon warns that it’s essential for hiring managers to understand what the data is and isn't saying. That’s where Elaura can help them identify the factors that matter and how to interpret and use those scores, whether that’s working out the right questions to ask in interviews, or the best ways to manage a member of staff once they’re on board.
At 33 Talent we wouldn’t make a decision based purely on psychometric results, but instead recommend using an assessment to complement your hiring and decision making process.
As Kathryn Woof, MD Asia at 33 Talent says, “whilst working with Elaura’s assessment over the last three years, I’ve seen how the results have sometimes surprised even the person who took the assessment. Key learnings, such as someone being motivated by the office space they work in, or by the amount of travel in their role, are not topics that will be straightforward to understand, even by the person themselves. This makes it hard to interview on those questions - but a psychometric assessment can uncover the reality”.
In terms of personal career development, we’ve got 2 very different assessments for you to try out so you can make up your own mind whether they are useful or not!
RECOMMENDED FOR: CHALLENGING YOUR BRAIN WITH A MINI WORKOUT
The first comes from our partners at connectcubed - it’s free and takes about 10 mins to complete - think puzzles and word play.
RECOMMENDED FOR: GETTING A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR MOTIVATIONS AND POTENTIAL STRESSORS
The second comes from our partners at elaura - they’re offering their hoozyu assessment at 15% off retail price using coupon code f7f9a6 at hoozyu.com. Hoozyu takes about 30 mins to complete, and you get a detailed interactive report afterwards, which we’ve used with our clients and candidates in self-development and team building workshops. In their words it allows you to cut through "what I am most aware of" and see instead "what is most important".
